S.F. No. 450/3A, Annai Nagar, Othakalmandapam Road, Chettipalayam, Coimbatore 641 201, Tamil Nadu, India

The US Department of Energy (DOE) sets minimum efficiency standards for electric motors under 10 CFR Part 431. Since June 2016, most general-purpose polyphase induction motors from 1 to 500 HP must meet NEMA Premium efficiency levels, equivalent to IE3. The rules apply to motors manufactured or imported for sale in the US, including motors built into other equipment.

What is changing

DOE published updated electric motor standards on 1 June 2023 (88 FR 36066). Compliance with the new and amended levels is required from 1 June 2027. The update includes Super Premium (IE4-level) requirements for certain larger motors from 100 to 250 HP. Check the regulatory text at 10 CFR 431.25 for the exact scope that applies to your motor.

What it means for a buyer

  • Continuous-duty (S1) motors in scope must meet the NEMA Premium nominal efficiency for their HP and pole count at 60 Hz, tested to the DOE test procedure, and be certified to DOE before sale.
  • Motors rated only for intermittent duty, such as S4 hoist-duty brake motors, are outside the scope of the federal electric-motor standards.
  • The importer and the manufacturer share responsibility: confirm the certification status before the first shipment, not after.

How EMPD approaches US programmes

EMPD IE3 motors are IE3 to IEC 60034-30-1, tested at 50 Hz. We do not claim NEMA Premium ratings in our datasheets. For each US programme we agree the compliance route at enquiry: the 60 Hz efficiency test by an accredited laboratory and DOE certification where the motor is in scope.
