Coimbatore grew up around textiles, and textile machinery is where many Coimbatore motor makers, EMPD included, learned their trade. Loom duty asks four things of a motor.
1. Starting torque
A loom motor must accelerate the drive and the sley quickly, many times an hour. Loom motors are designed for high starting torque with controlled starting current.
2. Heat from frequent starts
Each start heats the winding more than running does. The motor must be rated for the starting duty, not just the running power.
3. Lint and dust
Fibre clogs open motors and coats cooling fins. Totally enclosed, fan-cooled motors with IP55 protection keep lint out of the winding; regular cleaning of the fins keeps them cool.
4. Fit
Loom frames leave little room. Loom motors use compact frames and mountings that match the machine, often with special shafts or pulleys.
EMPD power-loom motors cover 0.25 to 3.7 kW in frames 80 to 112, built for continuous weaving duty. See power-loom motors or the textile industry page.
